Losing my humanity

Beatrice Muñoz McClelland
Born in Jersey City, NJ
Living & working in Miami, FL
My work conveys the mythic underlying layer of human experience, the fragility of life, and the physical and psychological pain of human existence.
I combine all aspects of art, from drawing and painting to sculptural manipulation of materials in order to express my deepest emotions and thoughts.
I construct, draw and collage pieces out of all types of materials that transmute the experiences of my life into indelible images of the darkness and the mystery of being.
Childhood
I was born in 1964 to immigrant Cuban parents living in Union City, New Jersey. My childhood in an urban ghetto forced me to imagine and visualize what was beyond the edges of my existence.
Commercial Life
A scholarship to Parsons School of Design made it possible to experience an amazing cultural melting pot and also to be exposed to the works of Julian Schnabel, Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Gerhard Richter, and Anselm Kiefer, to name a few influences.
I did not pursue a career in fine arts, even though I was selling paintings in New York before attending Parsons; instead I studied advertising/communications. I worked at magazines: Rolling Stone, Condé Nast Traveler, and Self, among them. By the time I was thirty, I was working for Estée Lauder as the VP of Creative Services. I left NYC shortly after quitting Estée Lauder. I wanted to find and dedicate my time to a vision that was my own. It took another 20 years of corporate indenture before I found my artistic balance, quitting my day job and dedicating full time to what I love...making art.
Now
My pieces reveal MY world, since I did not create the one I live in. You must look carefully, for just like life itself, there is far more meaning under the surface.
